WORDS

Words

Words that cut

Words that heal

Words that Cure

Words that seal

Words that destroy

Words that encourage

Words that discourage

How important are they?

They are only words

LISTEN

WATCH

I will tell you. Words aren’t everything

They are only part of the whole

Watch the eyes, watch the nose, watch the face, watch the pose

Those are the real words

The unsaid words

The unspoken words

The face the shows exhaustion

The face that shows fatigue

The stooped posture

The tired mother

The depressed teenager

The angry, resentment filled old man who has lived with a life of disappointments

Afraid of dying

He’s not angry at you

She’s screaming for help, but doesn’t know how

He’s fighting traffic to get home to his family

She’s mad at you because you remind her of someone who hurt her

He’s a perfectionist

He wants attention

She doesn’t want attention

She’s scared

He’s introverted and is afraid to talk

She’s desperately lonely and thinks no one cares

She’s anxious because her baby is sick

He’s upset because he just lost his job and is worried about his bills

Her mother just died

His grandfather just died

The baby just died

He’s dying

She just got bad news from the doctor

And you are upset because they cut you off in traffic, or stepped in front of you in line, or were dismissive of your excellent service. You think that they ignored what you said, but they probably never heard you. There’s too much on their mind.

Words, they are only words

LISTEN, THEY ARE SPEAKING MORE THAN WORDS

OPEN YOUR EYES AND SEE, WATCH

What’s the rest of the message?

There’s more to their words!

Where’s their heart?

Is it surrounded by walls?

Do they need love?

Do they need more time?

Do they need compassion?

Do they need a helping hand?

STOP REACTING, STOP JUDGING

START LISTENING

START WATCHING

WATCH AND LISTEN

You might learn something.

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (NIV)

Dear God: Help me to be more observant and attentive to others. Everyone around me is struggling with something, but too often I miss the forest for the trees. I get wrapped up in my own stuff and get angry when others don’t respond to me the way I want. I need to remember, everyone goes through hard times. People express their emotions in their words, actions and reactions to others. The words are only a symptom of a deeper issue. Help me to look beyond the words to the person’s heart.
